About Us

History

The Department of Jurisprudence and International is one of the five departments housed in the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin. From Inception, the Department of Jurisprudence and International has continued to wax strong in its human resource capacity and tangible research output. The department’s core philosophy is enshrined in the quest to ensure relevance and currency of research initiatives aimed at equipping students with the requisite capacity to compete favorably globally.

With a strong and vibrant staff composition with expertise covering international law, jurisprudence, gender, and women rights, right to education, right to access to portable and safe drinking water, judicial studies, construction of status and business and human rights, the department’s engagement in advancing relevant and current research is on the increase. Till date, the department remains the focal point for anchoring both national and international moot competitions in the faculty; hosting of the International Criminal Justice Day on July 17 of every year.

 In terms of publications, the department has produced journals “Journal of International and Comparative Law” and a book (Readings in Jurisprudence and International Law). The department houses the secretariat of an International Research Collaborative Network of the Law and Society Association which in 2017 produced a book on AU Agenda 2063, with two of its staff members on the editorial team with scholars from across the globe. The department is consistently motivated towards breaking new grounds and advancing the frontiers of academic scholarship and efficient ethics in academia.

In 2020, the Department won the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) research grant to promote the right of persons with disability through human rights education. The department continues to contribute to development of jurisprudence and teaching of international law in Nigeria and globally.

Leadership of the Department

With the diverse capacity groomed and housed in the department, the department have been blessed with quality and visionary leadership. Since inception, the Department has been steered by Prof. Abdulmumini Adebayo Oba (1997-2002); Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN (2003-2009); Prof. Jamiu Adedoyin Raji (2010-2012); Prof. Muhtar Etudaiye (2012-2014) and Prof. (Mrs) Nimah M Abdulraheem (2014-2018), Prof. J.O. Olatoke, SAN (2018-2020) Prof. Lukman Ayinla (2020-2022) Prof. A.C Onuora-Oguno (2022-2024) and currently Dr. Oluwabunmi L. Niyi-Gafar 2024 till date).  The department has 13 academic staff and 3 non-academic staff. The academic staff are experts in various fields of international law. 9 of them are holding doctoral degrees.
